Work Group Introduction

The Physical Media Dependent (PMD) Work Group develops optical interface specifications for optical transceivers to support high-bandwidth applications. The specifications are developed based on technologies that will be deployed within one to two years. This work group focuses on the development of first-generation large-capacity transceivers, without duplicating the technology development conducted by other standards organizations that focus on optimized second-generation transceivers. The initial projects will develop 800G transceivers utilizing 100G optical channels.
